The Three Ways to Enlightenment: Awareness, Space and Oneness

Three Ways to Realization

There is only one path to Enlightenment which is defocused awareness. There are three basic approaches to the defocusing of awareness, one through Awareness, one through Space and one through Form.

These three ways have been indicated in previous posts but I think that it is important to simplify the whole procedure by breaking it down into three processes or practices to clarify what defocused awareness is and how it is effected.

Each approach is a means that defocuses awareness. It is important to understand that only a moment of defocused awareness is necessary to experience Self-Awareness.

The precursor for Enlightenment and/or Self-Realization is always Self-Awareness or awareness of the Self.

Each of these experiences is distinct and each of these terms has a specific meaning:

Self-Awareness is awareness of the Self. Prior to Self-Realization or Enlightenment, one will experience whatever number of instances of Self-Awareness.

Self-Realization is realization of the Self. It is identical to Self-Awareness, except that there is an immediate recognition/realization of one's True and Ultimate Identity.

Enlightenment is an abiding awareness of Self. Self-Awareness that is sustained plus Self-Realization is what it means to be Enlightened.

It is through defocused awareness that one experiences Self-Awareness. The process can be outlined in a simple four-step process:

1. Defocus Awareness

2. Self-Awareness

3. Self-Realization

4. Enlightenment

As has been said there are three methods for defocusing awareness. The first method of defocusing through Awareness is an inward turning, an inner looking or an awareness of Being. The second method of defocusing through Space is an out going, an outward expanding or an experience of the Infinite. The third method of defocusing through Oneness is a blending, a merging or a penetrating to the Unitive Essence

Each of these three approaches will be discussed separately.

Enlightenment through Awareness

Where the journey begins and ends is in the same place. Awareness is intrinsically Enlightened by its very nature or more precisely the nature of awareness is Enlightenment. So, by bringing awareness back to itself or to its Center one can realize Self.

Awareness is turned inwardly, by surrendering, through relaxing, in letting go, by dropping, in falling, through retreating and by backing away.

Awareness must be turned about upon itself, investigated, explored as an interior process of self-knowing without reference to sensations, feelings or thoughts.

Awareness looks at, into, upon its own essence directly without an intermediary.

Awareness must see itself, naked, free and unadorned of either physiology or of psychology.

Awareness must come inward to the point of being behind the body, outside of the body and within the inside of the inside of everything.

Awareness must enter into awareness leaving both body and mind that Self may know Self.

Awareness must look only to itself for Happiness.

Awareness is your own possession. In order for Awareness to see its own Self, awareness must be turned 180 degrees.

When awareness is turned inward upon itself, there will begin to be felt a slight taste or flicker of bliss. This initial taste or touch of the flame of Bliss is the thread that must be followed and that will lead to greater Self-Awareness, Realization and Enlightenment.

Realization through Space

Space is the true nature of Awareness and of Self. There is no limit or bound to this Space, so the experience of limitation to or by a particular form is not an awareness of Reality.

Space is Infinite, Unlimited, Absolute and Ultimate. You are Space, not form, not even some energetic essence.

To realize Enlightenment through Space only requires an expanding, an opening, an unfolding of awareness in all directions outwardly.

Extend awareness to ascertain or determine the extent of Space or the depth of Awareness.

Expand awareness to determine the limits, the boundaries or the end of Space and of Awareness.

Open awareness to include everything.

Unfold awareness.

Infuse awareness into every object.

Spread awareness throughout all of Space.

Disperse or scatter awareness in all directions. See if you can give all of your awareness away or if you can lose any part of it...or perhaps you will end up possessing more awareness rather than less.

Space can always serve as an "object" of meditation, of contemplation or as a place of expansion.

There is no such thing as "consciousness expansion," given that Space, which is Awareness is already everywhere. All that is required is recognition and experience of this basic fact of existence.

Awareness is always unbounded by sensation, feeling or thinking.

Free Awareness from all forms and Self will be seen as Space.

Oneness through Form

Form is what gets our focus. We focus awareness upon "internal" and "external" forms or objects. This is how we remain unaware of our True Self. However, there is an alternative way to relate to objects and that is to use forms as springboards for the Awareness or Realization of Oneness.

Meaningless philosophical hair-splitting as to whether there is Oneness, One or Not-One/Not-Two bore me...the fact remains that Enlightenment is as much an Awareness of Oneness, as it is an Awareness of Space and as it is an Awareness of Self...so, form can be a means to Realization of this Oneness that is Loving and Joyous-Bliss.

Focus as intently as you can upon any single object.

Continue focusing thus until you become one with the object.

If you experience Emptiness, this is okay.

The experience of the unreality of "self" or "other" is transitory.

Continue focusing upon only the object.

When you experience Oneness with the object, you must shift awareness from the object to the Oneness.

Allow your awareness to rest in this experience of Oneness.

Once you have Oneness, turn only to Oneness.

Objects or forms are only aids to bring awareness to Oneness.

Stay with this awareness of Oneness.

Let the experience unfold.

After Oneness is perceived and persisted in, Love and Bliss will become apparent.

Rest, relax, enjoy.

Prior to awareness of Being, one must do.

After awareness of Being, one must only Be.

There is no need to hold onto, to clutch or to grasp these types of awareness. You are always in possession of your Self, which is Awareness, Space and Oneness.

What is Happiness?

The Center of the Self is Happiness

We begin with the question: What is Happiness? But, this may not be the best way to pose or the correct way to frame the question. In fact, it may be more accurate to ask: Who is Happiness? Why is that?

The reason is a very simple one: At the Center of the Self is Happiness and at the Center of everything lies the Self.

Does this answer anything or merely add additional muddle to an already altogether confusing and paradoxical concept?

However it is said, simplied or clarified; the challenge of the Self (i.e., who am I?) remains.
This is the most fundamental existential question that you must find the experiential answer to for yourself.

Although, the end can be told and the means may be shown, who and what your Self is must be known directly through experience. None can answer the question of Ultimate Identity for you.

All that can be done is to tell you the "A" and the "B" of this whole Enlightenment thing...as for "C," you will have to see it for yourself!

a.) you can be told what you will find.

THE WHAT.

b.) you can be shown the way to get there.

THE HOW.

The extent of any assistance that any teacher or teaching can offer anyone towards Enlightenment consists of just these two points: What and How.

Granted most teachers convey energy that can be helpful in the process and some even transmit energy that will bring others immediately into Self-awareness...but, most of this is just fishing!

Knowledge is better than luck in all areas and even more so in the spiritual. It is much better in the area of spiritual realization to make one's own luck.

Let's begin with a more thorough exploration of "A" or "what you will find when you get to Enlightenment."

First, I must give this disclaimer: Telling you is not showing you, knowing is not realizing and thinking you understand is not experiencing. What I am saying is the following: There is no substitute for a real experiential answer to the question, "who am I?" I hope that my meaning is clear.

So, what is Enlightenment?

Enlightenment is a happiness that is without any cause but awareness of Self...it is a self-happiness that is perfect...a clear luminous Light shining throughout all of creation, that is Love, Happiness, Joyous Blissfulness...this is not emotion...it is spiritual...a continuous medium of Life within which all of existence flourishes...it is a wonder that there is such a seeming incongruity as 'death,' within this teeming sea of spiritual life...can anything die? This, I, cannot...what is not born cannot die...simple as that...I was, I am and I will be...a perfect Wholeness, Oneness that incorporates, includes and unifies everything...did I say continuous and uninterrupted Joy?...Love and Happiness are one and the same...a transcendent Peace, not one that is dead or sterile but a Peace filled with Grace, Creativity and Beauty...you, I, we, It, That, is, are the very Space of Creation...what more do you need to know about Enlightenment? What more can be said? It is worth the struggle, the journey, even the pain, loss and loneliness, come what may...I wouldn't trade my Self-Realization for anything in this world, the next or the next even with all of the challenges I have faced in this lifetime! Understand what Enlightenment, Self-Realization is really about; it is about everything, including your Ultimate Identity which is the True Being of Everything...there is nothing greater than the ALL and EVERYTHING or bigger than the NOTHING of SPACE!

You see, Enlightenment will make you crazy...but it is a good crazy!

Now, that "A" is sufficiently elaborate and detailed, let us touch upon the big "B," "SHOW ME HOW TO GET THERE!"

But, you see, here's the real problem: you already are there. So, what do we do, now? We could start by scratching our head, banging it against a wall or by just giving up...but it is not all that bleak.

You see, there is a way to the goal and it lies in a simple insight that makes all methodologies clear, as to why they work and as to why they do not. The question rests with the emphasis of the particular method. What is the purpose of the given method? What is the method trying to achieve? How is going about it? Will it work?

The why of the methodology must be established before we can address the how.

The question is a single and overarching one: What is the goal, aim or purpose of any approach to Enlightenment regardless of means?

Think about that one for a second, a minute or an hour...what is the why of the methodology? Once we have that clear, then we are in a position to evaluate all methods according to a simple criteria and apply only those methods that actually are most effective and least inefficient.

So, why are we doing anything to reach Enlightenment?

Not, because we need to do anything to be Enlightened but...we must return awareness to Self and achieve Self-Awareness.

But, it is more specific than this. What we need to recognize is a basic principle of awareness and it is the fact of focus.

Awareness is focused. What does this mean? Why is this important?

Awareness always has a focus. It is like this: If awareness can be focused, awareness can be unfocused.

Awareness with any focus is typical and awareness that is unfocused is atypical and also happens to be Enlightened Awareness.

Why then are we applying any practical method towards Self-Awareness? We need to transition from a focused awareness to an unfocused awareness, through defocusing awareness.

A method that focuses awareness such as in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras is actually counterproductive. In fact, the correct approach to seek Enlightenment is not through narrowing focus but rather through expanding or broadening it.

Once this point is clear, then one must only evaluate methods for Enlightenment according to a single criteria: Does the given method focus or defocus awareness?

Methods that defocus awareness are effective means towards the end of Enlightenment.

Whereas, those methods that focus awareness are merely psychological exercises that may
nevertheless have relevance or value to mental or emotional development. As far as energy practices are concerned, they are a special case that are worth incorporating into a spiritual practice for their value to energy flow, circulation, health and well-being, regardless of their direct value to Enlightenment.

How does one defocus awareness? The best way to seek the answer to this question is to ask oneself: "How and why is awareness focused and upon what objects?"

The first step towards understanding defocusing of awareness is to understand focusing of awareness...but, then the short answer is, yes, there are a few basic ways to defocus awareness:

1. STOP FOCUSING AWARENESS!!!

2. Expand your awareness outwardly in all directions.

3. Turn your awareness inward toward Center.

4. Perceive the Space between all forms.

5. Do a Patanjali and focus upon a single object until you perceive the Oneness between your own Self and the object, then focus only upon That Oneness.

6. Relax and open your awareness to allow all into your field of Awareness.

7. Just let go, surrender, give up and drop all notions of self, body, mind, etc.

8. Get a Real Teacher.

Now, go, defocus, get unfocused, get unplugged!

The Natural State of Awareness is Bliss

The Natural State (Sahaja) vs. Focused Awareness

The actual state of awareness of most human beings is a focused state of awareness, thus the assumption that the focused state of awareness is the "natural" state of human awareness but...it is not true.

No focus is required for awareness to exist or to experience Bliss.

The true natural state of awareness is unfocused objectless awareness. This is the awareness of Awareness, of Space, of Oneness, of Grace and of Bliss.
There are two notions amongst spiritual practitioners and spiritual paths concerning spiritual Enlightenment (assuming that Enlightenment is even recognized on a given "spiritual" path):

The first notion is that the path to Enlightenment requires no effort.

The second notion is that Enlightenment is achieved after both time and effort.

Although, each notion has its merits both are misleading. The reason for this is simply that neither perspective states clearly what the exact nature of Enlightenment actually is and/or precisely how it is to be Realized. When the what and the how are not made plain, all discussions about Enlightenment are irrelevant.

The most important point that is not emphasized sufficiently, that is not clarified explicitly and that is not stressed often enough is that...Enlightenment is a fundamental qualitative shift of awareness, rather than a change in awareness.

To shift awareness is easy enough to do but what is this shift and how is it effected?

Descriptions of the experience of Enlightenment are useless in this regard. The process of Enlightenment must be defined, described and understood independently of any indications, intimations or information as to "what Nirvana feels like."

Enlightenment comes through a shift in awareness from a focused state to a defocused state and from a defocused state to an unfocused state. The experience of Enlightenment, in a word is Bliss. In ten words or less it is the Blissful Awareness of Space and Oneness. It is effortless to defocus awareness and yet it requires practice. It takes effort to focus awareness and yet we are so habituated to it that it seems effortless.

To focus awareness is to make effort and to defocus awareness requires no more effort than it takes to learn how to do it.

Yes, the usual condition of focused awareness that most human beings share, participate in and that the majority know, suffering so well is based upon effort. When this effort ceases the fundamental Enlightened nature of Awareness becomes apparent. It is Self-Evident.

It is in breaking the pattern of habitually focusing awareness upon objects, movements and patterns that requires sustained effort that awareness may become defocused.

Resting in the natural state of unfocused objectless awareness or Enlightenment is effortless. It is only the defocusing of awareness that requires practice.

These are the critical distinctions lacking in much of the Neo-Advaitin Satsangs and discussions. There are only two questions that a spiritual teacher needs to answer and they are: What is Enlightenment? AND How is Enlightenment achieved? AND The second question is more important than the first! The answer to both questions is found in the focus of awareness.
It is the focus of awareness that is the critical key piece to the whole jigsaw puzzle of this spiritual breakthrough or experience of Self that we call Enlightenment.

Right, in this, Now. As these unique ideas are being thought, words are being typed and potentially read during some possible future instant on the other side of my Self...there must be a focusing...of eyes...of hands...of thought...of awareness. All of this experience of life, expression, creation, communication and action happens in a field of focus.

Defocusing Awareness as a Practice
This is the real challenge...how to convey something that I cannot show you, that I cannot point to and that no abstraction or analogy will help you to experience.

Really, the question, the challenge and the answer are all one and the same...SELF.

None can give you Awareness of your own Self.
Already, Awareness is possessed.
I cannot give you Space.
Already, Space is everywhere.

You cannot become One.
Already, You are in Oneness.

Your attention is focused upon objects, upon your life, upon your environment and upon your imagination...now take, turn or twirl your focus the other way. Spin it around. Get behind. Get before. Get behind. Get outside. Get beside. Flip your focus inways. Flow your focus outwhere. Fill your focus with One-Ness. Twist awareness backward. Unwind awareness. Unfind yourself. Lose yourself. Leave yourself. Retreat Space-ward. Unbuild delusion. Evaporate illusions. Free your Self. Self-Liberate. Space dissipate. Where there are two, there is One. There is Oneness between every two. Spatiospherically Spread Out Awareness. Why not? Whatever experience says you can't is false. Whoever says it is impossible is wrong. The Infinite Is Already! Expand and see for your Self...

Expand your awareness...find the limits of your awareness...are there? Can you?
Penetrate deeply by focusing intently and striving to find the Oneness between forms.
Open your awareness as wide as you can, including as much within your awareness as can be contained.

Space is larger than all forms and You are Space.

Focus your awareness upon Space and find that the two are One.

Focus your awareness upon the largest Object of all, SPACE, SELF, AWARENESS, ONENESS.

To defocus is to refocus. It is to realize that the unfocused and objectless Awareness contains all objects, forms, energies, patterns and is the root of every kind of focus.

Focus upon an object: a thought; an emotion; a sensation...now make it fuzzy.
This is defocused awareness.

Take every assumption that you know for sure...scrap it, drop it, lose it.This is beginners mind.

Every hitch, hold, anchor or reference point that you keep...leave it, let it go, float away.

This is unfocused objectless awareness.

Not-focus. No-focus. Defocus. Not this. Not that. Not-self. Self.
